An existential examination through a multi-thematic story, while on the top of it is about a slightly future world wherein the economy has (apparently in just the dozen or so years recent to the action here) been turned fascist through takeover, apparently by one corporation. In spite of that (well, it didn't hurt it for me any), It fairly thoroughly engaged my attention. So... a young hacker is working with his accomplices (friends, frienemies, and/or...) to "save the world" - back or forward (?) - to a more economically fair world. One of his underlying motivations, the death of his father at the hands of this corporation, provides a murky shadow underworld to his psyche. This, of course, sets up the existential examination. That comes through one of the over-riding themes, or set of themes -- in essence, a twisted multi-level psycho-thriller (subtle at first, depending on your own nature of perception), using a first person narrative of, by, and for the hows and whys of the existence or purpose of the main character. The psycho-thriller aspect deepens in the computer-based warfare, not to exclude the increasingly pervasive psychological warfare, in a never-ending guessing game of who's-really-who and-who's-on-who's-side among a variety of very deeply shadowed individuals, none without at least potentially redeeming elements. Not just existentially speaking: a good example of why it's best to keep the roller-coaster on the screen (and not in your life, and certainly not in our politics). [By "Existential, I don't necessarily mean "spiritual." However, metaphors abound, again, depending on the nature of one's perception. "Save the world" is one of those phrases that immediately raise flags with any therapist, by the way, But then we live in a world of extremes now. And diversity of mind is becoming appreciated in many segments of society, including the scholastic psychological. Albeit "diversity" is one of those words that would seem to require a manual of interpretation (or a cheeked tongue extraction unit) to go along with it... AND I've only watched Season 1! ;-) ]
