With a longtime interest in all things Brit and the various colorful characters in and out of the Royal Family, I had certainly heard of the notorious abdication of Edward VIII "to be with the woman [he] loves." I looked forward to learning more about the story. I found this book to be well-written and thoroughly researched, giving interesting insight and background into the lives of the couple in question, as well as the thoughts and motives of their royal relatives and historical figures in various countries who sought to use and abuse them for various purposes. It paints a portrait of two self-indulgent individuals; more concerned about such things as getting ahold of their trivial personal belongings left behind in occupied France while the people of Britain were enduring sacrifices and the terror of the Blitz, and blind to the consequences of a British royal associating with Nazi sympathizers and carelessly dropping potentially sensitive information during dinner conversation. An excellent read.
