Apocalypse Now was probably the first mainstream film to bring matters to light about the U.S. Military deliberately selecting men from racial minorities and underprivileged families as the ones who would be fighting directly on the front-lines in the Vietnam War. I think that this eye-opening revelation (even though it was somewhat glossed over) was a fairly daring issue for director F. F. Coppola to bring up in his epic, little picture. It certainly put the policies of the American Draft Board and the U.S. Military under some severe scrutiny.
