This book managed to dig into some of the complexity of dealing with trauma, which I really didn't expect from an immortal fantasy novel. The author made the connection that a longer life means more trauma that you need to deal with. The biggest flaw is that it's not really clear why the main character has so much more of a conscience than the other immortals she is around, or why this conscience is only kicking in at the start of the story (presumably she was fine with doing terrible things throughout the rest of her life). The ending was also relatively predictable and shamelessly promoted a sequel because there was no real resolution.
