I'm not sure what astounds me more, how bad this film is or how popular it was when it was released! American Graffiti lacks any semblance of a solid plot line, its really just a film showcasing cars from the early 1960s. If you want to witness the birth of George Lucas' narcissism, American Graffiti will demonstrate it perfectly. According to Wikipedia, each of the male characters represent Lucas in a different phase in his young life. The Wikipedia entry also states that it was rejected by four studios and that it was labeled "unreleasable" If you were a teenager in 1960s and want to relive your youth of cars, cruising, and "chicks" with no substance, this film may be for you!
