A first-contact story for intelligent people. Caveat: the movie ends rather differently from the book. Most prefer the book's ending. Carl Sagan's only science-fiction book was so compelling, it was ripped off by Star Trek Deep Space Nine as well as the StarGate SG1 series (and spinoffs Atlantis and Universe). Specifically, Star Trek DS9 and the Stargate TV franchise lifted the idea of a wormhole gate travel system being discovered, but the builders are a long-missing alien race. Instead, other, newer species are making use of the gate system. That all said, this is a must-see movie for anyone who likes space or science fiction films. Politics, fear, money and religion all come into play as competing interests vs pure science & exploration. And there's religious terrorism some 16 years before 9-11. Grab the book when you borrow the movie. If you don't find the ending fulfilling, crack the book and read the last ten pages or so. Also see the 1996 movie "The Arrival" with Charlie Sheen. I know. But it really is good.
