A powerful, intimate story of brotherhood, family, love, vengeance, and madness in the early twentieth century. Three brothers are profoundly changed by falling in love with the same woman, and the events that follow shatter their lives in different ways. Brad Pitt is ideally cast in the lead as the wild untameable Tristan. Aidan Quinn is terrific as the elder brother Alfred, estranged from his family for years. Anthony Hopkins turns in another fine performance as the family patriarch, a former military officer who has seen the madness of war and wants to protect his family from it. The direction and production work of the crew are exceptional, and the dark, passionate qualities of the film are well worth seeing over and over again. This is a movie that's essential viewing.
