Grzimek's massive Animal life encyclopedia, 13v., 1972-75, VNR, also translated from the German, is endorsed by both of the above. The fact of greatest importance is that this is not a new edition of the four volumes on mammals which was part of the VNR edition. While the organization is unchanged (it is by classification), the treatment is radically different--mostly new authors, completely new illustrations, and greatly revised information. Grzimek (died 1987) and some 200 colleagues have contributed chapters emphasizing the study of animals in their natural environments with the latest findings from the fields of evolution, biochemistry, and genetics, together with phylogeny, energy consumption, optimum food intake, the mechanics of locomotion, and other factors in performance. The encyclopedia also features standardized charts for quick and easy comparisons of different species, the inclusion of English, French, and German common names in addition to the scientific nomenclature, and an index in each volume to that volume only. An index to the entire set will be sorely missed by readers unfamiliar with systematic classification. This translation from the German edition of 1988 contains some 3500 color illustrations-chiefly photos of extraordinary quality reflecting the current mastery of wildlife photography. A great many range maps are present. The VNR edition has had wide appeal--from elementary schools to research libraries. This splendid work with its wealth of new information justifies equal dissemination. 7.5x10". Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
