Fantastic new author !!! Unusual storyline and characters; lots of action, excellent pace of development and plot. Could hardly put it down. Can't wait for the sequel, The Faithless Hawk, due out 28 July 2020.

Wonderful world-building and a great protagonist, both gritty and rough. Fie is training to be chief of a group whose wandering role in society is disposing of plague victims, after all. She is smart, tough, crafty, and magic-wielding. And, due to her caste, the lowest of the low. Then she and her clan are inadvertently drawn into royal intrigue, finding themselves on the run in a much larger, more dangerous adventure than they've ever imagined. The telling of that tale is excellent. The experiences visceral, the dilemmas affecting, the events absorbing. Good plotting and pacing. This is one I really enjoyed.

(Here is my personal opinion) So, this was a pretty engaging read that pretty much hooked me from the beginning. World-building was spectacular and the character development was one of the best I've read. However, there were blips of things here and there that kind of took away from the reading experience (disturbing imagery and consistent mentioning that one character is gay to name two). Overall, 4/5. This is book one out of two, but sadly I probably won't read the next one. As I said before, this is my opinion and to each their own.

Happy Reading.
