Ferrante's world brought to life. Brilliantly.

Started watching this with very high hopes, immediately dashed. The sublitle choice is Spanish or English, but the English subtitles are for the hearing impaired. So you don't just get the words transalted, you also have to put up with [PHONE RINGS], [DISCONNECTS], [LAUGHS], [DOG BARKS] etc., etc., plus the names of whoever is speaking or calling. The top menu does give a 'No Subtitle' option but that doesn't work, you're stuck with one of the above options.
I'm sure lots of people aren't bothered by this but and I gave up five minutes in.

Unable to give this a star rating. We almost made it through the 1st episode but had to stop. Just to sad, bleak, and depressing with no indication it would get any better.

I watched 1st 2 episodes covering the girls aged 5-15 growing up poor in post-WWII Naples. What a grim time that seems to have been. People were regularly exposed to domestic violence, organized crime, loan sharks willing to kill, domestic violence as an average part of life, wealthy teens raping poor teen aged girls and beating up brothers who stand up for them with no one in the streets willing to stand up to anyone as they are kicked to death in the streets. I have no idea if this was how life really was for poor people in 1946 - 1956 Naples. Very grim and difficult life for everyone.

I was one of those people who watched tv series first and then being inspired to read books afterwards, in two different languages with amazing translation in both versions. Next season can not come soon enough for me! Will be re-reading books again and again....

Completely captivated by this series, set in 1950's Napoli. Elena and Lila have been friends since they were young, and this story follows them through their adolescence. The casting was spot on. Fans of the book will be happy to see that the series does a great job of following the storyline.

The filmmakers stuck amazingly close to the novels, the first and second in the quartet. They picked wonderful actors for the child and teen Lila, but Elena was not so well played and that dragged it down a bit. Looking forward to the next series.

Very good. A story of the childhood relationship between two girls in 1950's Naples, it both illuminates that place and era and tells a universal story of friendship and community. It rings very true, and this production does the story justice. Based on the first of the quartet of Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante, it ends when the girls are teens. A series based on the second novel is in the works, and hopefully the series will ultimately cover all 4 books. Highly recommended for all.
