Less than a hero's welcome... Returning to his family seat from Waterloo, Gervase Frant, seventh Earl of St Erth, could have expected more enthusiasm for his homecoming. His quiet cousin, stepmother, and young half-brother seem openly disappointed that he survived the wars. And when he begins to fall for his half-brother's sweetheart, his chilly reception goes from unfriendly to positively murderous. One of Heyer's most suspenseful Regency romances, The Quiet Gentleman combines an ingenious mystery plot with her signature witty style and effervescently engaging characters.

Mystery and romance in the Regency period - all wrapped up in Georgette Heyer's irreplicable style. This is among my favourite of Heyer's regency novels. The hero gentle kindness masks his steely resilience, and the heroine's prosaic character is a delight - and different to so many heroine archetypes. I just love the interactions, humour and the signs growing romance in the story. A full cast of secondary characters adds to the whole effect. Pure escapism with a happy ending.

Fun read, hard to put down. It's like junk food. Simple one dimensional characters.

I love Georgette Heyer, what can I say I just love her writing. I read her as a teenager and now I've come full circle and am rereading her books as a 65 year old. Her books offer a special kind of escapism. I remember reading somewhere that one of her novels helped a group of women to get through severe imprisonment in Europe during the Second World War. They just told each other orally the story one had read again and again. (Was it Friday's child?)

Georgette Heyer has the most likeable heroes. It's easy to fall in love with them. She really is the Queen of Regency Romance.

Georgette Heyer is probably the leading writer of regency romances - if you like that genre. She had an amazing depth of knowledge about the clothing and manners of the English aristocracy at that time.

This book is not to my taste because it has several paragraphs of more than one page and it is very congested. Hard to read.
