I confess that I only started reading the works of Alafair Burke because I am a big fan of her Father's writings. No one would ever say that she mimics her father- her ideas and style are all of her own choosing. I've read most of her work, including the Portland series from her wary days. She has improved with each novel.

The Ex is a great example of her improvement over the years. The plot is well thought out, the pacing is excellent, and she is sure of her characters. The protagonist may be flawed, but in a way the furthers the theme of guilt and consequences. I enjoyed the brisk dialogue, too. I am looking forward to reading her recently published novel.

Good short mystery in which a lawyer is asked to defend a former fiancé who has been accused of murder. As she delves deeper into creating a viable defense, the accused story begins to unravel.

A first read of this author.......good plot, and characters, will read more of her work.

This reads like a Harlequin romance with a sad ending. The lawyer is self centred and spends more time 'thinking' about herself, her past affairs and how clever/ pretty she is and her cool friends too! The plot had some great twists but
avoid this author if you are looking for decently written literature.

I really enjoyed this book.
Jack Harris has been charged with killing 3 people. His teenage daughter, Buckley, enlists the help of Olivia Randall, a high-powered defence attorney. Olivia is also the ex of Jack Harris. 20 years ago Olivia treated Jack badly and feels she owes it to him to take on his case.
As the evidence is revealed, Olivia goes between believing in Jack and trusting him to realizing he is lying to her and wondering whether he is in fact guilty. Loved the legal aspects to this novel.

This was a very interesting story. My problem was I didn't like the main character, Olivia. Unfortunately for me, I figured out "who did it" early on in the story. I finished the book in hopes of being wrong.

This very contemporary, fast-paced, legal thriller was recommended by Sarah Weinman during her interview on NPR in February 2016: "The 'Girl' in the Title: More than a Marketing Trend." The legal aspects of the plot are very interesting. One can tell that the author was a prosecutor. If you are a fan of TV shows like "Law and Order" and "How to Get Away with Murder," you will enjoy this novel. In fact, both of those shows are referenced in the book - look for them. Some people say that it doesn't matter to a criminal defense lawyer whether their client is innocent or guilty. Did he or didn't he? This reader won't tell. You will have to read the book to find out.

Compellingly written with a good twist at the end. I enjoy Alafair's writing more than her father's and look forward to more.
