Today is Princess Magnolia's birthday party, and she wants everything to be perfect. But just as her guests are arriving... Brring! Brring! The monster alarm! Princess Magnolia runs to the broom closet, ditches her frilly clothes, and becomes the Princess in Black! She rushes to the goat pasture, defeats the monster, and returns to the castle before her guests discover her secret. But every time Princess Magnolia is about to open her presents, the monster alarm rings again. And every time she rushes back-- an inside-out dress here, a missing shoe there-- it gets harder to keep the other princesses from being suspicious. Don't those monsters understand that now is not a good time for an attack?

This second installment in the Princess in Black series was a busy one for Princess Magnolia. Her perfect princess party is interrupted multiple times by her ring alarm and she must discreetly disappear and dispatch the monster threatening the goats and their safety.

One of my favorite things about the book (besides Frimplepants turning into Blacky) is the fight puns that are featured when Princess in Black is in combat mode: Frimple Flip, Tiara Trip, Tentacle Tangle, Royal Wrangle, Scepter Spank, Pasture Dash and Twinkle Twinkle Little Smash. So much fun.

Princess in Black and the Hungry Bunny Horde, here I come!

Another cute entry in this easy chapter book series - with a princess who is pink and perfect in her day job, but also fights monsters when she gets the secret bat signal (or glitter stone ring, as the case may be). This time the monster-fighting gets in the way of her birthday party, but not for long!

Everyone who, like myself, was totally charmed by last year's The Princess in Black will rejoice to see that she is back for more shenanigas -- and a birthday party! I love the twist on traditional princess stories, I love the illustrations, which are both adorable and often hilarious, I just love this book.
