It's refreshing to read a fantasy novel that isn't European-centric. This book is coded as an Arabic tale. It's fresh and interesting, and the way the story layers upon itself with a strong, gorgeous worldbuilding is a delight. Myth is interwoven (sometimes clunkily as a character just starts talking about it with little provocation, sometimes smoothly) into the plot, revealing a well-contemplated universe. A lot of thought and love has been put into this. It's a grim tale, full of blood and violence, but there's a beauty to it, too, with a breathtaking world to explore and fascinating characters to meet. Looks to be a promising series.

A delightful read. I enjoyed it and look forward to to the next two (? -- no more I hope, not wanting it to drag).
