The writer's craft shines in his memoir, told mostly in brief vignettes of a life in journalism. From Reuters to the BBC to a freelance reporter, Forsyth traveled the cold war landscapes of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, meeting an astonishing cast of characters from David Ben-Gurion to "Pik" Botha.

The first half of this memoir was especially interesting (for me). It describes his father’s experiences in Malaya (pre independence from Britain) and Singapore, followed by his own adventures in France, Germany (including communist East Berlin), Africa and Hong Kong. This book would be of interest to anyone familiar with the places he visited. It also provides some insight into the workings of the British Secret Service in the 1960s and 1970s.

Not as good as his fiction. Lacks personal details that make autobiography interesting.
