In this wry parable, a kingdom is divided into the three castes: the impeccably painted Alldunns who reside in a majestic palace; the Halfies who the Painter has left incomplete; and the untouchable Sketchies, simple charcoal outlines who are banished to the cursed forest. Chastised for her forbidden love for an Alldunn and shamed by her unadorned face, Halfie Claire runs away into the forest.

Artistically fun story with a surprisingly clever premise--characters in a painting struggle within a caste system that divides people based on whether the artist full painted them, left them half-done, or only briefly sketched them. When two characters from different castes fall in love, they spark a quest to reach beyond the confines of the painting and search for the artist himself. This would be a fun movie to discuss in a philosophy class, because I think there is actually a lot of complexity to unpack from it, but at the same time, it is enjoyable on a surface level as a cute, colorful, animated adventure.

Really lovely and intriguing. An interesting story and beautiful to watch.
Much better than I expected from that DVD cover photo.
Probably good for age 12 and up?

While the artwork is beautiful, the story is a bit lacking, and the characters are one-dimensional.

Dessin animé simple mais intéressant avec un bon message. Bon pour les enfants et les grands.

Amazing film for the creativity of artwork that is reminiscent of Picasso. The colors seem flat, but the animation has a 3D weight to it. There's a dream sequence that recalls Chagall. The music is also wonderful, switching from classical for the castle scenes to something a little wilder with an accordion for a scene during the Venetian carnival. Very enjoyable! The extras include a "making of" that is interesting and several trailers of other animated films that demonstrate the exciting range of talent in the world.
