Adapted from Andrea Levy's best-selling, award-winning novel, "Small Island" tells the moving saga of two couples - one Jamaican, one English - whose lives intertwine in both friendship and tragic misunderstanding in post-World-War-II Britain. Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean) and David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland) star as the Jamaican immigrants, with Ruth Wilson ("Jane Eyre") and Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Last Enemy") as their English landlords.

I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. Was very sorry as where it ended. I would have liked it to keep going. It had all the makings of a very good series. The racial elements/truths were portrayed well. It just left me wanting to see more...but it left your imagination to run wild with probable outcomes, not too many with positive outcomes given the time in history. Very entertaining and I recommend watching it.

The Brits know how to do a good drama.

A fascinating story with great performances with such a talented ensemble of world-class actors playing original, well-drawn characters .
The film retains its balance as it weaves in and out of characters' lives, while never short-changing any of them. FANTASTIC!

I felt that Hortense was played too broadly and seemed more like a caricature than a character. I would have liked more shades of grey in this study of black and white issues in post-war Britain. Still, it's a better than average movie and I recommend it.

A facinating look at racial issues during WW2.

Story within a story, and an honest revelation of how the Brits treated their supposed compatriots. Racism towards Blacks on the other side of the Pond. Worth the view.
