Great acting! Several short stories are, ordinary but unusual when weaved together. Final rain of frogs are creepy, astounding. But overall it's more esoteric than my cup of tea of masterful.

I never saw this movie when it came out in 1999 but it's never too late to catch up on a classic. Well rounded cast and interesting intertwining stories. Tom Cruise is such a creep in this role.

First time I watched it- thought it was good.
Second time watching it- realized it was a masterpiece.

Loved it. I was apprehensive initially seeing the three hour run time, but the writing and the acting and the stories were so compelling that the length wasn't an issue. The selection of Aimee Mann tunes added extremely effective melancholy to this powerful, deep human drama. An excellent film.

this is a good movie, too hard to explain, just see it.

“Magnolia” (188 minutes) was a free gift by the movie studio to director Paul Thomas Anderson because he made them a lot of money with “Boogie Nights.” It explores an extremely complex web of relationships of people needing forgiveness and love and the relationships are not with who they seem to be with in the early parts of the film. To determine whether things really fit together properly might take several viewings. Tom Cruise won a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. I suspect this film is just too complex for the average film audience.

Don't waste your time on this movie. I like movies that make me think as well as ones that just tell a very entertaining story. This movie fails on both counts. The pace was so fast and the scenes so disjointed that I felt like I was being yelled at by a bunch of very angry foul-mouthed people who were beating me over the head with that anger. Why sit there when people you don't know seem bent on taking their anger out on you?? Since many of the reviewers (on IMDB) who hated the film said the raining scene was great, I fast forwarded to watch. Even that scene was dumb.

I almost turned it off half way through because I was bored and not connected with what was happening, but I wanted to watch the whole movie because I've heard such great things about the movie. I was disappointed. It just didn't do it for me. The individual performances were good. I especially liked Melora Walters as Claudia and thought she did a great job. The scene in the restaurant, with Claudia and Officer Kurring, where they both promise to tell the truth to each other, was actually the first scene that I connected with and thought, okay now the movie is going to get good, but no, didn’t last for long. Julianne Moore was good too. It seems like a lot of great actors were thrown together to try to tell a story that was supposed to be so thought provoking and poignant, with all of their lives interwoven, but it didn't work for me. With all of these great actors and so many tragic story lines being told simultaneously, I expected to walk away saying/thinking "wow," but I didn't. It feels like Paul Thomas Anderson tried too hard to make a grand statement about life (relationships, fate, coincidence, forgiveness, happiness, and truth) while throwing in references to the Book of Exodus. It just seemed contrived to me.

A Masterpiece!

I believe Roger Ebert called this film "a masterpiece" and he would be correct. Simply put, this film is one of the greatest films I have ever scene. The movie starts out at a uncanny high pace & never lets the foot up. Through suicide attempts, death bed confessions, child genius, fame, pain, anguish, enlightenment and a myriad of humanities experiences. This film is a force and a work of a master.

If you love brilliant acting then this is the film for you. Tom Cruise deserved an Academy Award for his role ad T.J. Mackey. Cruise was nothing short of brilliant in delivering one of the most memorable performances in movie history! He was that good!
Julianne Moore who is also no stranger to great performances delivers once again in this absolutely gut wrenchingly powerful performance.

Melora Walters is captivating as the screwed up, drug addicted mess of a girl. Melora is simply brilliant in this performance that again could have got an Oscar nod. Brilliant!

John C. Reilly is absolutely spot on as the idealistic simple cop. Tremendous performance!

Phillip Seymour Hoffman does it again! Fantastic!

and the list of brilliant performances by almost every actor goes on.

This is an actors showcase! What a joy to watch this piece of art!

I cannot recommend this film enough. I think it's best to go into this film not knowing much about the plot or much else. Just sit back a be prepared to be awed!

A narrator asks you consider the meaning of three urban legends and the role of chance as the film opens.
In the first legend, one man jumps from the top of the building to commit suicide.
He would have been saved if a middle-aged couple didn't go crazy over the domestic quarrel.
But the fat wife points the gun toward the window and triggers the shot gun to scare her husband, assuming that it isn't loaded.
Actually, the gun is loaded, and the blast kills the man instantly while he's dropping from the top down to the ground.
His body happenes to be right outside the window when the blast takes place.
The corpse dropps to the safety net, which the window-washers (?) have forgotten to remove.
This insident interests me a great deal.
Then several monotonous episodes follow.
The characters' intentions are thwarted time and again as the story leapfrogs through their tangled lives, and I've lost interest.
So much so that I thought I wasted my time, and didn't want to see any more.
After all, I think this is one of the worst movies I've seen this year.
