a low-rent "Bladerunner" knock-off with cut-rate production values which unfortunately undermine an otherwise fine cast

A genetically inferior man assumes the identity of a superior one in order to pursue his lifelong dream of space travel.

Watched it in 1997 & again now in 2019..
Broad stroke issues are still relevant today, mix in THE ISLAND & comics like LOGAN...nevermind OVERLORD!

We were all so young, Uma & Ethan married & had children & divorced..
To see Ernest Borgnine & MAYA RUDOLPH from SNL was the delivery nurse!

Nominated for 1 Oscar. showing all 6 wins and 15 nominations

Gattaca is a propaganda film that sells a wicked agenda. That is why I don't like it, since it sells scientific racism so they can normalize Nazism once again. states, “there will be artificial wombs in the future”. It will reduce access to our true motherhood by interfering with our biological rights as a woman. Transhumanists desire to select hair type and eye colour and Hitler was literally trying to breed a master race of humans. This will happen again by transhumanists. They will control our breeding like cattle and this is unnatural. The goal to impose a master race will occur again. To demolish a woman, remove her rights and let them tear away the freedom of childbirth is in its early stages, the first emergence of a technocracy that will in its form enforce a global dictatorship. Certain individuals can manipulate hereditary traits, which grant certain individuals the power to choose to breed certain hereditary ‘superior’ traits and breed out ‘inferior’ traits as the Nazis did. Teens like myself must raise awareness to these cultural Marxist individuals or else fall for a shameful future. Watch this film, as you will see our technocratic future. 1/5 stars

This science fiction film tells the story of scientist Vincent Freeman who has always wanted to go to outer space. However, not being genetically modified, he was not physically adept enough to go to space. In a case of stolen identity, he uses the DNA, blood, and fingerprints of someone of superior physical structure to get him where he wants to be. This movie explores the premise of designing humans as exactly what you want them to be, and discriminating against those who may not be as physically or as mentally fit. This movie was interesting and new, and definitely appealed to my science side. I would rate this film 4/5 stars and recommend it to those interested in genetics and societal structures.

This 1997 film deals with some very real ethical concerns about genetic screening and, obviously, the plot would be uninteresting without conflict so the issues are taken to a logical extreme. To put this in some context, the human genome project started in 1990 and managed to map massive sequences of 4 amino acids in the DNA samples from a few individuals by 2000. That monumental task is getting easier all the time but without correlation of sequence variants to expressed traits, we still don't know what all of it means. The scene where the doctor explains choices to the prospective parents is particularly on point.

To say that this Sci-Fi soap opera clunker could have been a whole lot better would truly be an understatement. This movie is an insult to anyone who is an intelligent thinker.

This is a 1997 American SF drama written and directed by Andrew Niccol.
It is a story of a future society driven by eugenics where potential children are conceived through genetic manipulation to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents.
The film centers on Vincent Freeman, played by Ethan Hawke, who was conceived outside the eugenics program and struggles to overcome genetic discrimination to realize his dream of traveling into space.
It seems that the movie draws on concerns over reproductive technologies which facilitate eugenics, and the possible consequences of such technological developments for society.
Although it is thought-provoking, the film fails to deliver the theme in a more understandable and straightforward manner.
After all, the script appears to be ill-contrived and mangled.

OK. So there is actually quite an interesting premise and story at work here in Gattaca - A man who is not satisfied with his place in society changes his social status by taking on the identity of a guy who was genetically engineered to be "perfect"..... But you know what? This movie loses track of its own story as it flounders about for the rest of the time like a damn murder-mystery (which is boring as hell!).

The murder-mystery angle in the story is completely unnecessary and makes Gattaca tedious, pretentious and way too overlong..... Yes I know it's supposed to increase the tension because we don't know if Mister "Not-Satisfied-With-His-Life" will be found out by the police as an "in-valid" and a murder suspect. However, it occurs to me (and it should to you too) that a damn murder-mystery is not a damn science fiction movie!

Anyway - I found the "tension", as I call it, in Gattaca to be really more suited for waiting outside a Wal-Mart for a sale to begin and not at all suited for a science fiction movie.

Someone recently told us that the title comes from the four bases in the DNA sequence: Guanine, Thymine, Adenine and Cytosine.

This film was shot on location at the Marin County Civic Center.

I enjoyed the storyline, some minor details to overcome though. Even in sci-fi. The human aspect to live one's dream, despite the odds made up for this.

We now have discrimination down to a science

Is that the only way you can succeed, is to see me fail?

For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving. Maybe I'm going home.
