I am a big Terry Pratchett fan and have very much enjoyed his collection of Discworld novels. However, even a great author will on occasion write a dud and I am sad to say that Raising Steam is a dud. In his 40th book in the series he unsuccessfully tries to include practically every character that has made an appearence in his previous works. The story line is weak and lacks a central focus for the reader. There are too many minor tangents and much of the story is just distraction to be able to toss in another character from the past. While I applaud Mr Pratchett and will continue to read and reread his exceptional works, Raising Steam will not be on the reread list.
