I have watch quite a few Film Noir. I have to say this is one of my favorites. Great performance by one of the best Film Noir actors Sterling Hayden. Way ahead of it’s time. It is hard for me to watch a Film Noir that is not B/W, it is about shadow and darkness and camera angles and on location filming. Some of that darkness and shadow is harder to do in color. If it is in color you lose something, it is hard to explain. If you like classic Film Noir don’t miss this one.
May have been a good movie but I do not want to spend time on a black and white. We turned it off shortly after it started.
I didn't like Director Stanley Kubrick's doubling back over the killing of the horse and the fight at the racetrack bar.
Marie Windsor is great as the golddigger Sherry Peatty and so is Elisha Cook Jr. as her worm of a husband.

Is this the perfect film noir? It might be. I don't think noir gets any better than this.
Interesting that instead of telling the story in a linear fashion, Kubrick gives an outline for the plot in the earlier scenes, then subsequently shows action going on parallel to later central scenes. The producers were unsure they could make this work, tried re-cutting to form a linear narrative, then reverted to the earlier version. It worked.

Tight economical storytelling, brilliant camera work, wonderful ensemble performances - this is a film far ahead of its time. A true gem from the 50's.
This movie could have another title: Gone With The Wind. I've seen it before and liked it every time. All the characters are definitely characters in their own right. No one detracts from anyone else, no ham performances. But it is a depressing picture where no one wins anything. In fact, just about everyone looses their life before it is all said and done. Stanley Kubrick was to say the least an iconoclastic film director.

Enjoyed the unique style of narration, to the point. Didn't know this was done by Stanley Kubric but once I saw his name I knew I had to give it a chance & very glad I did. Love Kubric's sense of irony.
Very good, but I wish it was longer. It pulled me in, and suddenly it was over. (What 2nd. DVD?).
