FIRST BOOK IN Fina Ludlow SERIES

Fina Ludlow is one of the best new characters I've read in awhile- strong and smart and not horrified to take all the hits along the way of this crazy ride of a mystery. She comes from a tough family that is loyal and intelligent and always in the gray areas of life. They are her greatest burden and deepest ally.

But she can more than take care of herself, even with a crowd of (mostly loyal) supporting characters around her. In fact, with such a thrill ride for a story, it's surprising just how many characters there are. I had to keep a list on my bookmark after the twentieth introduction before page 100. Also, there are a lot of extraneous details that fill up some scenes, almost like Thoft has to paint out the set of each room. But perhaps all of that filler is just to show us that a real PI's world is full of details and dead ends and surprising connections. And it did let me get a hold of who the main character was, and get firmly on her side. She's great. Can't wait to read more in the series.

She is an excellent writer. Her female PI character is wonderful. I would definitely rate Ingrid Thoft's novels right up there with Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovich and Sarah Paretsky. Her books are a must read.

Really enjoyable read from a Seattle author. The mystery was good, and meaty enough to sustain the page count. Fina, the main character, was a great mix of flawed and endearing. Eager to continue reading in this series.

Well, I was kind of disappointed with this one. I am a huge Cornwell and Parker fan. I love a good detective novel. Part of what I love is the moral code, though maybe slightly skewed, that they live by. While Thoft tried to make family loyalty that code, the family had some SERIOUS flaws and didn't seem to have very many redeeming qualities. Aside from the that the story was decent though dragged a little for a mystery novel.
