In this autobiographical novel Erneaux writes about her working class father, who believed that self-denial and careful speech would allow him to be accepted by the middle class. Poignant and intense, this portrait describes beautifully the legacy of provincial French life his daughter had to forsake in exchange for a bourgeois lifestyle.
