Man, this is probably the best movie about being a client and having a client ever made! J-Grish was on fleek in the 90s! This came out during the great Grish wave and is one of the most entertaining of the lot, partly because of the great cast. Sarandon and Jones go head to head. Lots of other people (J.T. Walsh! Brad Renfro [RIP]! Anthony Edwards! Mary-Louise Parker!) show up. You might also like: "The Firm," "A Time to Kill," "The Pelican Brief," legal thrillers in general.

I liked the book better.

THE CLIENT has all the trappings of a feel-good underdog story, but the creepy elements of a New Orleans crime boss and the less-than-honourable players in the judicial system darken this tale of a rough-around-the-edges boy who witnesses far too much and is shoved through circumstance between a rock and a hard place in an attempt to keep his family safe and still obey the law. Considering the titular character is Brad Renfro's first role, he knocks it out of the park, but the most valuable player here is Susan Sarandon whose performance as Reggie Love, his kind-hearted lawyer with a shaky past, is cleverly articulated without us ever losing faith in her. Reggie really goes above and beyond, and for reasons she knows only in her heart. The growing trust between attorney and client is key as everything begins to spin faster and faster. When everyone seems to be a villain, who do you trust? I tend to like John Grisham film adaptations and THE CLIENT is no different. I recommend it.

Read the book when it came out. Loved it. Saw the movie when it first came out. Did not love it. Susan Sarandon and Brad Renfro ruined it for me and I was nothing but disappointed. When I read the book, I pictured Reggie Love, as described as perhaps being portrayed by Kathy Bates OR, perhaps, by Beatrice Arthur. Not a lisping, Southern accented glamorous Susan Sarandon. Ruined it for me. Brad Renfro was just a little too bratty for my tastes in the movie and he ruined it for me, too. Just couldn't enjoy it with those two factors distracting me throughout the movie. I'll admit, it was good, but it would have been better if they used an older actress to play Reggie like John Gresham intended. I know others LOVE this movie, but, I just wish they would have used Kathy Bates or Beatrice Arthur, or Rue MacClanahan or ANYONE but Susan Sarandon. JMHO.

Great story. 2 hours way too long. Too street wise for a 11 year old, who did a great job of acting. Very traumatic for two young boys to go through with the mob!!!!!!

A surprisingly successful piece of work ... Even Tommy Lee Jones does a credible job. They maintain a good level of suspense while the plot moves forward with no gratuitous tit-shots, no slow motion flashbacks and believable characters, dialogue and setting.

not a bad movie, but for whatever reason the kid got on my nerves more as the film progressed.

While usually the case in most instances, the movie is a disappointment after the book. But Greshman spins the good plot that makes it interesting. The kid playing the Client played the best role. Tommy Lee Jones was much better than Susan Saradon who played a very marginal role. The latter was a casting rather than acting issue in my mind.

This is one of Susan Sarandon's better movies, up there with Bull Durham, Dead Man Walking, and Thelma & Louise. And Tommy Lee Jones is pretty well hated as the lawyer trying to get a child to take the stand and tell a secret that was passed on to him by a lawyer who, soon after, committed suicide.

I havent read the book but i thought this movie was good. It kept you on your toes with the suspense of what was going to happen.
