Honestly I never have had a favorite book, but after reading this one, I feel like I've finally found my favorite. This book will tear and rip your heart into a million pieces and put it back together at the very end. Lauren Myracle has been an author who has accompanied me throughout my childhood, I've been reading her preteen books since forever, and she has always managed to delight.

This book was great, except it lacked a good ending. I also really liked the tone of the book and the message.

Amazing novel. I think it's really inspiring yet tragic, it's just incredible. I think i'll be reading more by this author.

For me, this book suffered from the "afterschool special" feeling. Cat's hometown is just a crash blossom of awful - homophobia, drug use, parental neglect, sexual assault. It felt too grim, like Lauren Myracle was trying too hard to create this awful combination of scenarios. One thing I will say for Myracle; she tries hard not to make any one character the "bad guy." All the characters are nuanced and have complex motivations. That didn't stop me from finding them all profoundly irritating. Also, it's hard to relate to a story when the entire impetus for the action is a person in a coma whom we only know via other people's recollections.

An interesting coming of age novel full of well-examined themes: drugs, death, poverty, sexual assault, and what it means to be gay.

I appreciate the writing level in this book. Unlike much teen fiction, the author respects the maturity of teenagers and uses language and themes accordingly.

This really is a terrific book. The writer knows how to create a plot, suspense and draws some well-thought out characters. When Cat's former best friend, Patrick, is the vicitim of a "gay bashing" crime, she decides it's time to come out of her shell and discover who did this to him. Good messages about the need for tolerance and understanding and a strong female character who stands up for herself.

'I wondered-and again, I wasn't sure- but I wondered if a bit of God's light was maybe back inside me. If so, it was a dove that might at any moment fly away. But for now, here it was: soft and wondrous in the branches of my soul.'
