Add a CommentUgh. While watching this all I could think was "Show me the ending." because it's SO long! Had this movie been a lot shorter I would have liked it a lot better but it just dragged on and on and on to the point where I didn't really care anymore.
"Show me the money!" You could show me a lot of money and I still wouldn't watch this again. Somehow this was nominated for a bunch of Oscars in 1996 and Cuba Gooding Jr. even won best supporting actor. Pretty much everything about this movie is terrible. Tom Cruise is insufferable, as is Renee Zellweger. It's just incredibly formulaic and predictable, with clumsy direction from Cameron Crowe, whose only good movies are "Say Anything" and "Singles." I guess the music was OK. One of the worst mainstream movies of the past 2 decades.
Normally I enjoy Tom Cruise movies for their comedy. Watching Tom Cruise run puts me in a state of hysterical laughter. There was no running in this movie in the short segment I watched.
I could only bear watching only the first 30 minutes or so before I hit the eject button on my DVD player. There was too much Tom Cruise. If I had watched more I would have gotten sick and would have had to go to ER.
This movie deserves less than a 1 start.
The problem with Cameron Crowe as a director is that while he makes entertaining films, they are nothing more than that.
I figured this movie was worth seeing as there are references to some of the lines in the movie ("show me the money!", "you complete me", etc...) that I have come across in various forms of media. It did not disappoint. It is worth watching at least once.
Probably Tom Cruise's best romantic comedy and one of his best interpretations of a character. He and Cuba Gooding Jr carry the entire movie on their back. The plot and the character development are the key to understanding why this movie is so cautivating. This is the story of two men who are both very unhappy for different reasons and who proceed to mutually support each other in their quest to find that which is missing in their lives. The movie starts with Cruise's character having a flash-discovery of why his professional life is so unsatisfying. He proceeds to precipitate a change that eventually gets him fired from his job and ends his relationship with his girlfriend. He starts a new life with a great deal of struggle but this time knowing who he wants to be professionaly. But his personal life continues to be in disarray. Cuba Gooding Jr's character is the opposite. His personal life is in beautiful balance but his professional life is in shambles. So Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr's characters are both learning from each other and helping each other find in their life what the other has... One trying to find an emotional life and the other trying to re-discover his professional one... can't give out any more of the plot with out ruining the movie experience. It is a must watch with great acting all around. Cuba Gooding Jr won an academy award for his performance.
The kid outshone Jerry. Good movie
Disappointing. The ending really saved the whole movie, but the beginning and the middle were not great.
