This is a 2009 musical directed and produced by Rob Marshall and written by Michael Tolkin and Anthony Minghella, base on the 1982 musical Nine, which in turn is based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical 1963 film 8½.
Although it is an incredible all-star cast with stunning visuals, it turns out a flop.
No wonder it was a commercial failure.
The film director and protagonist Contini meets the cardinal, who says, "Do you think the people must see so much sex?"
"My films are what I imagine," replied Contini.
"Then your imagination has no moral training."
"How do you train your imagination?"
"Imagination is God's garden," said the cardinal, "Don't let the devil play in it. Teach our Italian women to be wives, not whores. Don't make us look at filth and debauchery. Make us proud to be Italian."
Then Contini sinks to the bottom of the bathtub.
Nine is chaotic and curiously distant.

Not as easy to watch as a Mama Mia and could have made the story a little less artsy. Great caste but it was missing something.

Very weird. What a waste of talent.

Very good but fades in comparison with Fellini's "8 1/2"

Lost interest early on. Just not the kind of movie I like.

I don't understand why this movie flopped in the US... It's a good musical and though the story is a bit hard to follow, the performances are stellar.

Excellent choreography, acting, photography and costumes; but no story. The extra features were the best part. I especially liked that the women seemed to bond; women like Penelope and Nicole you wouldn't think would be friends.

This was so bad it was beyond belief. the story is disjointed and pointless, and the dancing over vampy, cheesy and teriible.

I had no idea what this would be about - and I was pleasantly surprised. I love Daniel Day Lewis and Italian so the combination was wonderful.

It is a complete satire on the huge egos of Italian men, Italian filmmakers, and men in general. Based on the comments I think a lot of viewers missed that. Or maybe they are not so familiar with Fellini and all the others.

Loved Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench - so fun and entertaining; not really profound but good fun! Lots of music numbers which may be a turnoff to some.
