He captured the Beauty Killer, one of the most deranged serial killers in the country. Now, Portland police detective Archie Sheridan faces a different kind of killer--a brutal rain season that has flooded the Willamette River, claiming several lives. As water levels rise, so does the fear. Because some of the victims didn't drown--they were murdered.

The first body contains a rare poison. Three others prove to be murders as well. And with each gruesome discovery the medical examiner uncovers, Archie begins to realize he has not escaped his nightmares--even with his deadliest enemy behind bars. The flood has washed up old skeletons from the past. And a ruthless new serial killer rules the night...

Thank goodness Gretchen Lowell is not the center of this story--I am so tired of her and of Archie being besotted by her. It was time for a change and this was a delightful homage to healing and moving on as well as a thrill ride. (And Susan changed her hair again.) The flooding of Portland, the familiar places, and the history were spellbinding. I doubt that people who have never survived a spring in the PNW can relate to the cement skies and the endless downpour, but it was all vividly real to me.

I enjoy the Gretchen Lowell and Archie sheridan series. I found the start of the book was interesting then half way thru it lost something, I kept reading hoping for something to draw me back in.

The 4th Book in the Gretchen Lowell/Archie Sheridan series gives Susan Ward the chance to have the spotlight focused on her and for Gretchen Lowell to take a step back. The book focuses on the flooding of Portland and a new serial killer that is staging his killings as drownings. The book finds some of the new and old characters having their lives put at risk once again.

Archie and Susan's relationship appears to grow in this book and makes the reader question the true depth of their bond. I look forward to the next book in this series to see how the characters develop and progress. While Gretchen wasn't a major player in this book, I still found this book to be an enjoyable read.

Very disappointing effort by Cain

I was a little disappointed that Gretchen wasn't the focus of this one, but i still loved the book. Hopefully Susan and Archie will be around for a long time to come and if Gretchen 'slithers by' from time to time to say hello, I think I can live with it. Keep up the good writing Chelsea Cain and hope to see more of your work soon!

I started out really loving this story, thinking it was the best of the series. But, I felt like it got lost somewhere along the way. And, the ending was too neat and clean. As long as Cain keeps writing about Archie and Susan, I'll keep coming back for more.

An excellent thriller. Technically this is the 4th book in a series that follows the same detective(s), reporter and serial killer, however, unlike the last 3 books, this one puts the Gretchen Lowell serial killer storeyline on the side. And I really liked the change. By book 3 I was getting sick of all of Archie's issues with Gretchen so it was nice to have a bit of a stand alone story here. This book was a very fast, exciting read with some neat twists and turns. However, the killer in this book wasn't very interesting (although his methodology was cool) and the climax was pretty anti-climatic (they solved the crime too easily). Still, it was fun read and I can't wait for the next chelsea Cain book.

SOOOO glad to finally read an installment of Archie's life that doesn't focus on Gretchen Lowell. I thought the author was going to milk that one forever & quite frankly, she & their relationship had become predictable. She's still there but in the background & Archie is making progress....professionally & emotionally.
But there are other crazies to take her place & Archie has his hands full. Susan Ward figures prominently & she is an interesting & entertaining counterpart to Archie's fragile demeanor. Good read.
