Follows the life of Howard Hughes as the twentysomething millionaire, having already made a fortune improving the design of oil-drilling bits, who comes to Hollywood with an interest in getting into the picture business. It doesn't take long for Hughes to jump from producer to director of his first major film project, a World War I air epic. The film was a massive hit, and the eccentric inventor became a mogul in Hollywood, making Jean Harlow a star and enjoying a romance with Katharine Hepburn. But Hollywood's old-boy network never fully accepted Hughes, and in time his passion for flying began to reclaim his attentions. In time he began designing new planes, setting air speed records, flying around the world, and risking his life testing aircraft. Hughes also found time to romance Ava Gardner and founded his own airline, Trans-World Airlines. As his ideas became bolder and more eccentric, he gained many powerful enemies.

A little long, but it's worth a watch.

A long and very interesting movie. Howard Hughes became more eccentric as he got older. He became bolder with his thinking and aircraft design. I think I would like to watch this movie again sometime.
The second disk is very interesting to watch. Howard Hughes was much more than a wealthy film maker and aviator with a mental illness. His work in avaiation continues to infulence the world of exploration to this day. His medical reasearch foundation continues it's work in many areas. As Howard Hughes became more and more reclusive, his wealth continued to increase. unfortunately he died without heirs or a will. In life Howard Hughes tried very hard to avoid taxes, how unfortunate he did not plan for his departure.

A gripping biopic... Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent in this movie!

A middling good portrayal of the life of Howard Hughes up until shortly after WWII. A man with a truly exceptional life

For an epic movie directed by Martin Scorsese it still leaves something to be desired because it leaves out and cuts short certain things about Howard Hughes's life personally and politically that should have been brazenly portrayed in this film.Maybe if Martin Scorsese would have wrote this film also that would have happened but the Weinstein brothers are 2 of the executive producers of this.More than likely they're the reason why this film ends on an incomplete note unfortunately and that's too bad and so sad,BUT I DIGRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like any biography, it is hard to make it fit a theme. The different sections of his life make the story disjointed, despite attempts to connect things (and some great acting jobs). The lack of backstory (aside from the odd repeated scene with his mother) didn't help get a feeling for the character. (*I* thought it was worth it just to see the Spruce Goose fly, but I'm prejudiced.)

The first 45 minutes were indescribably boring. I continued watching it only because Leonardo DiCaprio was, as always, great. I did not like the story, there was no plot, no explanation who the main character was, and why he acted so strangely every now and than. After watching this movie I have definitely understood that I do not enjoy Martin Scorsese's movies at all. Making a long movie does not necessarily mean making an epic movie. There might be a bit of lack of self reflection. Movie is a product like any other and this director has a niche clientele. I do not understand the nominations except for DiCaprio and great Alan Alda.

Original title that was rejected: "I'm Howard Hughes. Now get these goddamn bugs off of me!"

Hollywood drivel. Hammy overacting. I shut it off after 15 minutes.

Ava Gardner: You listened to my phone calls?
Howard Hughes: No! No! No! Honey I would never do that! I'd never do that! I... I just read the transcripts, that's all.
