This movie has a lot going for it. In addition to being a true story, the leads are very likeable. You could easily go to Virgil's house and hang out with him. There's a lot of warmth and feeling to the leads. You like them, you respect them. Even Kelly MacGilis gives a strong performance, even though her role was a difficult one as the loving, over-protective sister. She played it just right. There is also a wonderful cameo by the magnificent Nathan Lane. Even though this is not a fairy tale and it has some hard topics to discuss, the story is more of a journey than a beginning and an end. The acting is earnest and nuanced, the dialog is strong, the scenery is beautiful, even the supporting characters feel like real people's mostly all true. Strong 'A'.
