Look back at the all but vanished Jewish way of life that existed in eastern Europe before World War II. Through never before seen archival films, vintage photographs, traditional cantorial and Klezmer music, and personal recollections, once-vibrant cities and small towns come alive again. Narrated by Elliot Gould, the film explores everything from the fascinating language of Yiddish to the style of dress and more.

A bit parochial (pun intended) and quite sentimental, but interesting.

This film helped me to really "get it".

I live in Brooklyn, encounter Jewish people of many varieties, including orthodox/Hasidic. At times I've felt personally insulted by their tendency to shun me. But after seeing how much assimilation had taken place in the Yiddish community and getting another level of understanding of the richness and vastness of the culture that was ripped away in the not so distant past, I understand better the need these folks feel to stay separated from the larger culture and how they could get the idea that God will punish Jews and other people who stray from the fold, Torah life.

It is sad for all of us that so much of this culture was lost, that hateful actions (wars, holocaust, Crown Heights riots) cause such distrust and equally hateful counteractions and that all of the gifts that this community and other oppressed communities can contribute to their fellow citizens of the universe will remain locked away to the benefit of a very few. Evil begets evil. Spread love!
