The coffin of one of January's black friends falls open, to reveal a white man. Only his white friend Hannibal knows the dead man, but seems to be hiding something. The dead man, carrying no ID, was among a mostly-English group staying at a posh hotel next to a stable. Chicanery's clearly involved, as a young white man will be hanged unless he talks. And he refuses to talk. Hannibal seems to be involved but can't be found. Rage, money, investment in land in England, all seem to be involved. January goes underground as a piano player in a bordello to get more info. Not the best in the series, as usually Hannibal's the sidekick January can count on. The outcome is a bit far-fetched too. We do learn more about Hannibal's life. It still gets 4 stars because of the writing.

Yes, one should read this series, to get to know more about the characters, their relationships and the circumstances of their lives. But each case can stand alone.
Always thoughtfully written. I can't read enough about Benjamin January's cases.

There are seven characters introduced on the first page, and possibly six more on the second. I lost count in all the chaos.
