This book has a wonderful story concept about a girl who loses her smile after being told she can't have a cookie and then goes in search of it. I love how the smile is brought back by her mom giving her compliments.
But here is why I did not give it more stars. The main--in color-- illustrations are adorable and would be fine alone, but the author has added a lot of busy sketch illustrations that are often difficult to see and are very distracting. She also uses many many different font types. For a read-a-loud this is fine, but for young readers this would be very frustrating. I like that the author uses some big words for learning, but she also uses phrases young children would not know like "in a nutshell", "multi-eyed" alien (when she could have said an alien with many eyes), and "spic and span".
This book had so much potential, but I felt it was overdone and did not deliver for little children. It felt more like an upper elementary book to me.
Would I recommend this book? Maybe. Depending on the audience and age range
