All Alison ever wanted was a blissful childhood for her six children, with summers at the beach and birthday parties on the lawn at their family home. Together with Ingrid, the family au pair, she has worked hard to create a real 'old-fashioned family life.' But beneath its postcard sheen, the picture is clouded by a distant father, Alison's inexplicable emotional outbursts, and long-repressed secrets that no one dares mention.

Well written certainly, but coming myself from a family of six I found the idea that this would make people want to avoid children unfounded. With parents like these maybe.

Just finished listening to this – really enjoyed it. I was a bit immersed in British writers as I just read The Outcast and Small Wars by Sadie Jones. The Brits sure have a hard time in family relationships – they all seem so alienated from their parents and the concept of love is always very troubled….and talk about lack of communication.

Narrator Josephine Bailey does an excellent job portraying the nine members of this family at various stages in their lives, from childhood to old age. Most enjoyable.
