A grown up version of Harry Potter meets the Chronicles of Narnia. It was an excellent read, and I really wanted to rate it higher, but there were too many plot points that didn't get fleshed out. It's the first of a series so maybe the next one will give me some answers.

Incessantly self-indulgent angst. Privileged, whiny main character was tedious and the plot was very limited. It draws heavily from The Magicians Nephew specifically and the other Narnia books more generally. Book is more pleased with itself than pleasing to read. I barely made it through.

An interesting book with some clever twists. It is surprisingly skimpy on the magic despite the title and premise, and it is at times overbearingly nihilistic. I kept waiting for the plot to develop into some purpose or direction, but even when the "quest" came along, it seemed like the characters didn't really care about it and were disappointed by it. It basically asks the question, what if the Narnia books were real, and a group of nihilistic 20-somethings decided to pay it a visit...

I thought this was more of an anti-fantasy than a fantasy, with immature, self-centered characters that I wouldn't want to know in real life.
