First book in a very nice series. Police Chief Kate Burkholder who has left her Amish community must solve murders involving the people of her heritage. Add to this the fact that she has a major secret in her past, and you have a complicated situation of trying to get the people she rejected to cooperate in the investigations. Nice character development.

The author has a real knack for description. More than a knack; it’s a real talent. Descriptions of people, places, moods, weather, all come alive. The main character is well-developed, somewhat original (an Amish female), and likeable. I got about halfway through the book thinking it would be getting five stars in my review. Then it began to suffer from all the usual problems. All the other characters were one-dimensional and hackneyed – the tough, underappreciated black cop, the loopy switchboard girl, the politician sheriff, and of course the dark, hard-drinking, bad boy state agent (male) to create sexual tension and work effectively by breaking the rules. The author also seems to feel obligated to paint us a picture of as much gore and sadistic torture as possible, pandering to the readership’s worst elements. I figured out who the murderer was well before it was revealed, and when it was revealed it was done so clumsily it was a big letdown. The killer turned into a comic book villain in an instant, a Jekyll and Hyde transformation. Still, it held my interest up to the end. It helped that the reader on the audiobook was a particularly good actress.

This was my favorite of the four books I read on a recent trip - good storyline, good pace, keeps you guessing until fairly near the end. The main character, Kate Burkholder, was raised Amish, but left the church. She's now returned to Painters Mill, her hometown, where her knowledge of the Amish community makes her the right candidate to walk the line between the Amish and the "English" as the burg's Chief of Police.

Then the first of a serial killer's victims shows up, and Kate and her squad have to maneuver through horrific crime scenes, political intervention and a very nervous community to solve the crimes. Kate has secrets of her own that may have a bearing on the case.

Suffice it to say that I liked Sworn to Silence so much that I promptly ordered the other three books in the series upon my return from vacation. They'll be showing up soon on my "in progress" list.

Well written, and a gripping story--but it got a little gruesome in parts.
