Story of a young boy who's mom was unstable, the foster care system and a happy life.

bibliotechnocrat Jun 03, 2015

Andy Bridge winds up a foster child in a family of control-freak crazy but he never forgets his mother and the possibility of love. This is a captivating memoir of a childhood spent waiting for the other shoe to drop - never fitting in, never belonging, never knowing if his 'family' will be keeping him. It's also a great story of overcoming odds. Bridge uses his terrible experiences to inform and motivate his ultimate career as legal defender of kids caught up in foster 'care' just as he was.

This is Andrew Bridge's memoir of growing up in foster care in Los Angeles and the problems and loneliness the system creates for the children. Though his mother, Hope, loved him dearly, she was only able to care for him for a short time, succumbing to mental illness when he was 7. His life with his foster family was devoid of love or affection. He was consumed by loneliness and longing for his mother. This is a well written and very personal story that should touch the heart of anyone who reads it. Andrew ultimately became a lawyer, defying the odds against him, and has dedicated his life to helping children living in poverty and in the foster care system.
