I read this for the "Published When You Were 20" part of my 2020 reading challenge. It was very long and a bit drawn out, but overall I really enjoyed it. The twists kept me guessing and I liked the characters, I look forward to the next book.

I just LOVED this book. The movie went a touch overboard, though. But, this book is simply beautifully written. <3

Such a touching book. You can see Stephanie Meyer's special touches from her "Twilight" series. Easily one of my most favorite books for a long time.

This is a book I couldn't wait to finish to find out what happens, yet, one I never wanted to end because it was so good. The souls, an alien race visit the earth and see all the violence humans do. They are very peace-loving beings full of love and compassion. Seeing the true nature of humans terrifies them and they begin to incorporate themselves in the humans to save the race from destroying itself. Humans don't understand what is going on, they view the souls as parasites and keep trying to figure out how to remove them and return the person back to human without killing both. Melanie is captured and has the soul Wander implanted but to Wander's surprise Melanie refuses to relinquish possession of her mind and body. Thus the story unfolds how 2 unique beings become best friends and each is willing to surrender to allow the other to continue.

Although I was not a fan of the Twilight, I gave this book a chance because the story sounded good. I LOVED IT. It was amazing, I've read this book countless times since I bought it years ago. I love the character development, the love story, and I especially love how carefully it describes a world that has regressed to creating its own soap and scrap together a working hive of humans running away from a dystopia of foreign aliens who have made earth their homes and humans their hosts. The most interesting of all is that the book is told from the perspective of the alien herself, who has taken a host who refuses to give up memories of her family, leading her to find them. I will always find myself rereading this book.

I loved the audiobook, read by Kate Reading.
Longing for more.

Enjoyable book that was a little confusing at the beginning trying to keep up with the "Seekers", "Healers", and "Souls" and aliens being inserted into human bodies, but once get through the introduction it was a real page-turner wondering what would happen next. I'd classify The Host as a drama rather than a romance as the relationships are more towards all humans some of whom the The Host has memories before her existence. While the book had quite a bit of suspense, if looking for action should turn elsewhere.

I know that Stephanie Meyer has a penchant for being a "fad," but after reading through the first few chapters of The Host, you fall in love. There is depth and dimension to many of the characters, and the psychological factor of body and soul is a wonderful concept to delve in to. I highly recommend this novel for those who love a good love story, especially when the stakes are life or death.

The Host is a vastly different kind of prose than Meyer’s infamous Twilight series. The book draws you into a world where the Earth has been overtaken by an alien species, known as the ‘souls’. The aliens take over the mind and body of their ‘host’ and continue the host’s life to experience it, as they have also done on other alien worlds. However, when Melanie, one of the last free humans refuses to give in to the alien known as “the Wanderer”, they face common enemies, make discoveries about each other, and learn about friendship, family, and love. The book is fast-paced but holds a bit of mystery and adventure. Definite intrigue with the element of danger! (submitted by SMC)

In the future Earth has been taken over by a unique alien species. The infiltration was slow and undetected until it was too late. Now these aliens, known as Souls, live inside human bodies, which act as hosts for the invading parasites. Usually when a Soul is placed in a new host it is able to take full control of the body, pushing aside any remnant of the human consciousness that once lived inside.

After a Soul named Wanderer is inserted into her new host she soon realizes something isn't right. It seems the human who once inhabited this body refuses to give in and die. Melanie Stryder wants no part of Wanderer and is doing everything she can to fight back. Even though Wanderer controls the body, nothing she does is able to quench Melanie's spirit. She is always there, in her head, so to speak.

As time goes by Melanie's memories become Wanderer's and soon she finds herself longing for the people that meant so much to her host. Melanie left behind her brother and the man she loves, and now Wanderer has developed those same feelings. Soon Wanderer and Melanie begin working together to track down Melanie's loved ones, all the while being careful that they don't lead the other Souls to the humans who are in hiding. When they finally do find them, they must figure out a way to live peacefully with a group of humans who have grown to hate Souls. Emotions flare and relationships are tested in agonizing ways as two lives must share one body and as enemies must learn to co-exist and survive.

Melanie "Mel" Stryder is one of few "wild" humans remaining on earth after invasion. After "insertion" into a human body, alien souls erase the human occupant and establish a claim over the body and mind. Wanderer is a soul who has lived on eight different planets previously, with Mel being her ninth host body. Upon waking inside her new body, Wanderer is shocked by the power and vividness of human emotions, memories, and senses, and quickly learns that Melanie is not willing to give up the entirety of her mind.

A member of a species that takes over the minds of human bodies, Wanderer is unable to disregard his host's love for a man in hiding, a situation that forces both possessor and host to become unwilling allies.

Lauren Jul 24, 2008

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves, a human who still lives in hiding named Jared. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
