Like a Welsh Am#65533;lie set in a pub, Gold is a tender, understated tale of love, loss, and growing up. It is also vintage Dan Rhodes, one of the most critically beloved novelists working today. Miyuki Woodward, lover of beer and microwaveable food, has been taking a two-week vacation--away from her companion--to the same seaside town in Wales for the last eight years. She is made to feel at home at the salty seaside pub, where Short Mr. Hughes, Tall Mr. Hughes, and Mr. Puw are happy to add her to their trivia-contest team. This year, following an impulsive artistic act involving gold spray paint, Miyuki will take part in the most turbulent events the village has seen since Tall Mr. Hughes returned from the pub toilet without remembering to button up. Gold is a bittersweet, idiosyncratic, funny affirmation of life and a touchingly satisfying story rich in pathos, insight, and asides from the best-selling author of Timoleon Vieta Come Home and Anthropology .

A great little read; I was perfectly enjoying myself and ready to give it four stars, and then the ending. One star.

I have actually read this novel twice, after recently recalling its main character, Miyuki and thinking how much I enjoyed her holiday adventure. Coincidentally, this time I was the exact age that Miyuki is during the novel's setting.

I agree with one of the previous comments that the end can leave you a bit perplexed, but I think that one can guess what occurred based on the foreshadowing earlier in the novel.

On a related note, this novel does a good job of presenting some of the struggles of being a gay person in a heterocentric society, which I think are accessible and realistic for both men and women.

I adored this book. I did not want to be done with the characters at the end of the book. Such a charming story set in a pastoral village on the coast of Wales.

Has the New Zealand tv series 'Nothing Trivial' got you interested in the pub quiz scene? This short smart novel by the wonderful Dan Rhodes has the trad pub quiz trivia fun as the backdrop for the story of Miyuki, on holiday in a quaint seaside town.

A nice little read with a cozy feel to it, due to the atmosphere and characters. Not sure about the very end, but I liked it overall.
