[The] call-and-response pattern, alternating with rhyming text and many sound effects, makes Mara Bergman's suspenseful picture book a winning read-aloud. Lines such as "The alligator's mouth was wide. Its teeth were long. Its jaws were strong," allow children to easily explore both adjectives and the sounds within words.

For older toddlers as slightly scary or for toddlers who are used to hearing stories. Had them say with me one of the phrases that repeated in the story. Worked well at my toddler time. Would work for ages 3-6 also.

My 2.5 year old squeals and giggles with this one, especially when the kids stand up to the alligator.

My 4-year-old LOVES this book! The alligator is scary, but the kids pluck up their courage and send him packing. Good use of occasional rhyme and repetitive lines makes this book fun for the kids to "read" along with you.

Great fun to read-aloud because of the suspense and lends itself to audience participation.
