An excellent read. Starts out as a creepy horror story, but became a fascinating revelation of a re-imagined vampire race.

I really loved this book. I really, really admire the way Octavia butler is able to design such complex settings for her charcters and how the family setting becomes so much more than parents and child. When you read you feel knots in your stomach because your like how does something so intricate and complicated work, how could it work in real life.

She always makes you think and examine your own life and the ideas and morals you belive to be true when she presents her work insuch a natural way, as if the structure of the chacters lives are something normal, and nothing to really blink at.

I enjoyed the characters and the plot alike, but did she really need to be 11?

Octavia Butler reimagines what it is to be a vampire, with a far more sensible, caring, symbiotic relationship than the average bite ‘em and leave ‘em plotline. While the frank sexuality is uncomfortable, I was fascinated by Shori’s need to set up a group what is essentially a group marriage in order to survive. I agree with the criticisms that her need to enslave her people is deeply disturbing, but I appreciate that Butler is exploring these themes with an eye to making her audience re-examine and question the parameters of deeply unequal relationships.

Amazing, engaging writing! It is advertised as a vampire novel but nothing is ever that simple with Octavia Butler. A gripping story and an excellent place to start with Butler's writing.

I really love this book, it's amazing. But when I wanted to read it again,(1) it was on hold for weeks
(2) when it finally got to the "in transit" step, it has been 2 weeks and is still "in transit"
