I'll admit that my primary reason for watching this is to see a young Alan Rickman in action. To the series' credit, however, it does a great job of bringing the book to life, staying true to the storyline.

The Barchester Chronicles has many, many pleasures—all of which are the ones we associate with these BBC “Masterpiece Theatre” adaptations of literary classics. Excellent casting (Donald Pleasence and Nigel Hawthorne are particularly good in this one) , literate scripts, faces that we don’t often find on the “big screen” and glimpses of the sensibilities of bygone eras. I say “glimpses”, only because once we’ve seen productions like these, many of us (myself included) are not inclined to actually pick up the big, fat tomes that they’re based upon. They have now become the “Classics Illustrated” Comic Books for the middlebrow middle-aged. (Myself included). Be that as it may, I am now seeking out those productions of the last thirty years that I somehow missed, for one feels particularly virtuous sitting through these multi-part marathons. (The only downside I can think of is this dashed craving for a continuous cup of tea).
