Caribou, or reindeer, live in the extreme cold of the Tundra and Tiaga (northern forests). They have hooves that spread out to act like snow shoes and three inch thick, air-filled, fur coats to help them survive in these harsh environments. They can also smell and find food that's buried under up to 40 inches of snow! They live in large herds that sometimes contain up to a million caribou. Caribou live difficult lives. When they aren't dealing with sub-zero temperatures, swarms of insects keep them from eating and their bites can result in a caribou losing over a quart of blood in a week.
