One of my favorite dramatic movies of all-time, a classic for those who appreciate historical context, dialogue, meaning, and a "novel" depicted in a movie. Autobiographical story that doesn't lose anything in movie form. This is a movie that will be appreciated by those who like to sit down and read a good book - a true story told through a work of art. Not for "movie-theater-goers" who wish for a story line that is told in an hour and forty-five minutes with lots of action. Not all movies are for everyone. Deeply poignant film that shows incredible attention to detail by its creators - basic knowledge of the Japanese invasion of Shanghai, China would be helpful (5-minute read on Google) in appreciating historical events surrounding privileged Jamie's journey in developing into "Jim." A truly great story with a soundtrack that compliments the deeply felt meaning of the film beautifully.
I can't believe the positive reviews for this movie. It was mediocre at best and so tedious and boring beyond belief.
10 year old Christian Bale's character was so annoying, but that's the fault of terrible writing and directing.
Also, the constant use of horrible soundtrack music is unbearable, especially the choir boy singing.
Highest possible reccomendation ONLY IF YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM INSOMNIA. Otherwise avoid like the plague.
I'd not seen this since it's release I'd forgotten much & learned so much more during that time. Excellent recreation of the book. The 2nd disc about the filming was enlightening. Highly recommend.
This movie makes me examine what is truly important when it gets right down to the essence. I have only recently realized that the lead is played by a very young Christian Bale. The P 51 Mustang is my all time favorite plane.
great script, well acted
Unbearable acting and direction. Lousy script that is as trite as it is maudlin, stupid as it is contrived.
My absolute favorite movie! Always brings me to tears.
A young Christian Bale is the pampered child growing up in the British high society of Shanghai who witnesses the Japanese overrun the city. Poignant, compelling, meaningful. Will leave you in awe of the drama of that era, and better equipped to appreciate the peace we have today.
