Add a SummaryGreatly stylized gangsters story set in old new york. Grand in scale and ambition, Gangs Of New York looks beautiful in an ugly sort of way, but feels a little bloated as the story moves along. The acting is really great for the most part, but not all the characters accents hold up for the whole film. It has some of the camera work that Martin Scorsese is known for, but not all of his regular bag of tricks are used, and although he has done large scenes before with lots of people in them, this time most of the larger fight scenes looked very staged and many of the actors who are supposed to be selling the action just seemed to be going through the motions. Overall this is a really interesting film which takes a look at early New York history in a way never done before, but a long run time and pacing issues keeps this from being one of Scorsese's best.

Great acting, costumes, music.
Based in 1860’s New York, Amsterdam Vallon is an Irish immigrant who was just released from prison. He decides that he wants revenge on the man that killed his father - a large anti-immigration gang leader. In order to do so, however, he must find his way into the man’s inner circle so that he can get as close to him as possible. This historical drama draws on America’s past as well as the innate desire to find one’s place in the world and seek justice for the ones that they love. The movie is interesting, charming, and suspenseful. I would rate this film 4/5 stars and recommend it to crime and history lovers. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
Solid, entertaining movie. A little long though.
Stopped watching it once, decided it couldn't be that bad if Day-Lewis is in it, and started again. It isn't that bad, though not that good either. Day-Lewis is worth the effort, a far more nuanced portrayal than you'd expect after watching the first 15 minutes. There's next to no plot, an OK script, acting superb to indifferent, just a series of over-cooked scenes. Yes, New York was a violent and ugly city at that time, but Scorsese glorifies in the violence and seediness in Tarantino-esque fashion and as with Tarantino, I find the sylization of violence distasteful. A long film, it's just about worth hanging in to the end.
Political corruption, street violence, pathological hatred of foreigners in mid-19th century America: you've come a long way boys!
I couldn't play the third sixth of the film (about the last half hour of disc one, from which I inferred that the character Bill was shot and injured and Amsterdam earned his trust), but it was nevertheless a good movie (but not a film: it degraded into typical plot devices). The music was for the most part very apt, especially at the beginning (drumming and fifes), but the electric guitars sounded awful. The colours, lighting... well just the imagery as a whole was really great. I should like to see it again, but the whole thing.
One of the worst movies I ever saw. There Will Be Blood & Revenant are 2 of my favorites ever...So this here is proof that just because your actors were in good movies, doesn't mean every movie they're in will be good. Lewis is okay but can't save this movie with the plot holes & comical character he's written into. The writers really do make the movie. As usual, the female lead is just another hooker, but Cameron Diaz is exceptionally bad. The plot is stupid & makes no sense, revolving around invented ideas of 'honor' & phony, glorified roles. The idea that this is historically accurate is absurd.
The movie is pretty good. It definitely reeks of "epicness", and is a bit more over-bloody and theatrical than it really was, although the place was no Disneyland. The best part of the movie, by far is Daniel Day-Lewis' Bill "The Butcher" Cutting. Although you might say he's reaching a bit and over-acting, I think it gives his character that old-time feel a bit more and definitely solidifies him as one of the greatest villains of the decade, in my opinion. The worst part, is Cameron Diaz. Not great acting, but even moreso, her part seemed completely unnecessary. She seems to be in there only to provide a love interest for the main protagonist (DiCaprio) and a link between the the main stars. Yawn. The rest of the movie is okay. Over-blown, but definitely interesting and fun. Lots of good, lots of bad, lots of ho-hum equals about 3 stars.
Gangs of New York ---- (DVD - 2003) This show is not for the young to watch! It does have a Historical value. ---- Enjoy! 3 1/2 Stars. ---- RichardPaul (Finished 12-25-2013)
More like a ferocious medieval folk tale than Scorsese's usual look into modern gangster culture, this packs a lot of actual historical information into an epic recreation of the birth of New York City's (and the US's) history of violence. That 5-Points set is worth the price of admission. (Walk down to Columbus Park in Chinatown today and try not to be moved!) Stir that up with probably the most incredible role ever played by the great Daniel Day Lewis as the historically inspired Bill the Butcher..........WOOPSADAISY!
