A childhood coming of age film that introduces Ingemar as he navigates a series of life events. From the awkward sexual references to the bizarre cast of characters, the film is still completely believable because truth is still stranger than fiction.

I saw this film in the theaters in 1985 when I was fourteen and I still think about it from time to time. Ingemar is a sweet boy whose terminally ill mother sends him to live with his uncle in a small town in Sweden. There he encounters quirky townsfolk and a new best friend who help him feel better about his struggles.

This is a Swedish Classic. Very well filmed and the story is enthralling.

Good - My Life as a Dog (1985) Foreign - Swedish 101 min. Oscar nominated for Best Director (Lasse Hallstrom) and Best Adapted Screenplay. This is a coming of age story for young Ingemar who is bombarded by sexual references from his mates to the adults responsible for his care. What I particularily enjoy about European films in general is their take on realism specifically when it comes to relationships. In this case, the relationship between Ingemar and his mother, who he drives absolutely nuts with frustration because Ingemar is not a very pleasent boy to raise. Some of those scenes were sad to watch for the mother but funny as well because it reminded me of my younger days driving my own mother nuts and I'm sure you could relate as well.
