I remember watching this movie with my cousin when we were kids, so it hits my nostalgia buttons for that alone, but upon watching it as an adult, I realize that I loved it even then for more reasons than how pretty Brad Pitt was.

A sweeping, tragic story of three brothers who fall in love with/are attracted to the same woman against the backdrop of World War I and Prohibition era Montana. Follow wild and individualist Tristan (Pitt), the second of the three Ludlow brothers, as he grapples with his failure to protect youngest brother Samuel during the war, which leads down a road that will gut his entire family. Then there is Alfred (Aidan Quinn), the eldest brother, who longs to serve his country honorably as his father (Anthony Hopkins) did, and also suffers deeply for loving and marrying a woman who loved/was obsessed with Tristan. That woman is Susannah (Julia Ormund), who comes to the Ludlow family first as Samuel's fiance, and goes on to become Tristan's lover, and, finally, Alfred's wife.

It's a story of love, hate, madness, obsession, family, and legacy. The drama is epic.

Also, the film's musical score is utterly breathtaking. An amazing film overall and worth at least one go.

A beautiful romantic adventure movie, of action, racism, love, lost loves, gangsters, family and legacy.

A well done and nice story of early 20th century Montana. A Brad Pitt movie to make those who care for him swoon in a romantic setting. Nice soundtrack.

Dreary movie, but well done with beautiful scenery. Haven’t read the book, so don’t know if it is true to the original story or not.

This is a 1994 American epic drama directed by Edward Zwick, based on the 1979 novella of the same title by Jim Harrison.
From World War I through the Prohibition era, ending with a brief scene set in 1963, the film shows the lives of three brothers and their father living in the wilderness and plains of Montana in the early 20th century and how their lives are affected by nature, history, war and love.
It was filmed on location in Alberta and British Columbia.
The World War I battlefield scenes took two weeks to film and were shot near Morley, Alberta, with hundreds of locals and a few Canadian Forces soldiers recruited as extras.
The Ghost River Wilderness Area in Alberta served as the filming location for the Ludlow ranch.
Gastown in Vancouver was augmented with period building facades for the Helena, Montana street scenes.
Hotel scenes were shot at the Hotel Europe at 43 Powell Street in Vancouver.
So this film appears quite interesting to Vancouverites as well as Albertans.

If you like character-driven films with some gorgeous scenery and bad life decisions, this is for you. Totally a guilty-pleasure type of movie for those long winter nights.

A powerful, intimate story of brotherhood, family, love, vengeance, and madness in the early twentieth century. Three brothers are profoundly changed by falling in love with the same woman, and the events that follow shatter their lives in different ways. Brad Pitt is ideally cast in the lead as the wild untameable Tristan. Aidan Quinn is terrific as the elder brother Alfred, estranged from his family for years. Anthony Hopkins turns in another fine performance as the family patriarch, a former military officer who has seen the madness of war and wants to protect his family from it. The direction and production work of the crew are exceptional, and the dark, passionate qualities of the film are well worth seeing over and over again. This is a movie that's essential viewing.
