Nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, Millers Kill, New York is about as safe as it gets. That's why Episcopal minister Clare Fergusson is shocked when the July Fourth weekend brings a rash of vicious assaults to the scenic town. Even Clare's good friend, police chief Russ Van Alstyne, is shaken by the brutality of the crimes--especially when it appears that the victims were chosen because they are gay. But when a third assault of an out-of-town developer ends in murder, Clare and Russ wonder if the recent crime wave is connected to the victim's controversial plan to open an upscale spa in Miller's Kill. Not all things in the tiny town are what they seem--and soon, Clare and Russ are left to fight their unspoken attraction to one another even as they uncover a labyrinthine conspiracy that threatens to turn deadly for them both...

Julia Spencer-Fleming follows up her award-winning debut mystery, In the Bleak Midwinter , with the equally riveting A Fountain Filled with Blood .

This second book in the Clare Fergusson series was overflowing with current issues, suspects for various crimes, and collateral damage caused by the scheming bad guys. Clare does not always choose wisely in her reactions to the situations in which she finds herself, and she has difficulty convincing Russ Van Alstyne that she has gathered pertinent information and that her approach to dealing with the bad guys is correct. She pulls rank on him at one point in order to pull off her solution to a problem. He tricks her into letting him get her out of another situation. There are page turning cliff hangers and hiding in the bathroom comedy, as well as suspects we don't suspect and several surprises in the solution.

It would be nice if Linda were a little more complex.

Spencer-Fleming writes cozy mysteries that have more than an edge than you generally find in this form. A thoroughly enjoyable and complex protagonist, ex-Army helicopter pilot and now Episcopalian priest Fergusson, holds the reader's interest as she untangles the local crimes.

Another good entry in this series. Clare gets herself into some interesting (and funny) scrapes as she does some investigation into the murder of the contractor for a local, and controversial, building project. I knew it wouldn't be long before the author got Clare back in a helicopter and I was not disappointed.

A great mystery. Combines positive LGBTQ characters and Christianity. My church book club read it and thought is was great!
