Written by two of the leading experts in Plains tribes and their culture, With Eagle Tail tells the story of young newspaper photographer Arnold Lupson, who left his home in England after World War One to live among the Native American tribes of the North American Plains. Lupson formed a relationship with the tribes that was to last for thirty years. He married Maggie, widow of the Sarcee chief Big Belly, and spent most of his time on the Sarcee reserve. The enduring legacy of his life was his photographs. By his death in 1951, Lupson had amassed a large and impressive collection that catalogued his day-to-day endeavour. Many of the old ways of the tribes still existed and it was this that so fascinated Lupson and determined him to record for prosperity all that he saw. His remarkable images, many published here for the first time, offer a glimpse of the material culture of the Sarcee, Blackfoot and Stoney tribes, setting the lives of the Indians of the period in perspective against those of earlier times when they lived as free people in their ancestral lands. Lupson moved freely under the name Eagle Tail.
