Can you believe this album is 25 years old next month (September 2016)? This album, and it's companion, was a behemoth. Literally. Taken together, it's 30 songs and 150 minutes long. "Appetite for Destruction," by contrast, was lean, hungry, and dangerous; a rebuke to their Sunset Strip hair metal peers and to bloated arena rock. With these albums, they were in danger of becoming a bloated arena rock act. There were horns, backing vocalists, and raft of guest musicians, including Alice Cooper, Blind Melon's Shannon Hoon, and Hanoi Rock's Michael Monroe.
The album is simultaneously defensive and aggressive with titles like "Don't Damn Me," "Right Next Door to Hell," and "Back Off Bitch." It is a quintessential product of the CD era as the CD's longer running time meant songs that might have once been b-sides or just left in the vault were now on the album. I'm sure many people simply made their own best of mix from the 2 CDs. That said, this has a couple of their best ballads: "Don't Cry" and all 8 glorious minutes of "November Rain." While Guns have been touring with most of the original line-up, it's not the same and "Use Your Illusion" would really be their last statement as a band. Nothing lasts forever.
